Stage Magic – Behind The Scenes Of Berlin State Opera

  • Stage Magic © Karl & Monika Forster

For the first time, Berlin State Opera stages an opera by Jean-Philippe Rameau – and presenter Eric Mayer takes his audience along to experience at close quarters how this may work out. Hippolyte Et Aricie calls for the whole range of baroque stage magic with exuberant music and splendorous dance scenes, with gods, monsters and spectacular forces of nature. But Sir Simon Rattle and his cast of superb opera stars cannot simply indulge in Rameau’s overwhelming thetricality. To them Ólafur Elíasson’s artistry with light, reflections and swirling stage smoke instead of "standard“ stage scenery sometimes feels like a mission impossible.
