Bizet's Carmen At The Aix-En-Provence Festival
Carmen, the mesmerizing bohemian, seduces the soldier Don Jose, who gives up his life for her: he abandons his fiancée Micaëla, deserts the army, and starts smuggling. There will be no happy ending. Dmitri Tcherniakov, well known for his ambitious dramaturgic propositions and his iconoclastic cast, teams up with the Spanish conductor Pablos Heras-Casado to modernise this iconic masterpiece. With the French mezzo-soprano Stéphanie d’Oustrac and the young American tenor Michael Fabiano interpreting rewritten dialogues, the plot is transported into a contemporary scenery, while Don Jose’s point of view is taken on for an even more sensual and authentic experience.
