Bugaku: Sanju-No-Ha

  • © NHK – Japan Broadcasting Corporation

Bugaku is a traditional performing art of Japan that emerged when music and dance which arrived from China more than 1,400 years ago blended with ancient Japanese entertainment. The music is provided by about 20 people on “fue” flutes and drums with distinctive sounds, whom some regard as being the world’s oldest orchestra. In the programme, musicians who belong to the Imperial Household Agency as official successors to the traditions of Bugaku, presented a piece depicting generals in command of an army. The warrior wearing a war helmet in the shape of the dragon dances valiantly with a spear in his hands.
