In college, Michael Tilson Thomas explored the work of American poets such as Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, William Carlos Williams, Hart Crane and E.E. Cummings. Carl Sandburg was also one of them. In his collection Smoke and Steel he found a poem entitled Four Preludes On Playthings of the Wind. Over a period of time, Michael Tilson Thomas worked on several musical treatments of this poem and the recent result is a semi-staged production with lighting and projections.
