From Bach To Brazil: Heitor Villa-Lobos
Most music lovers have heard a version of Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 but who knows the original composer? Villa-Lobos’ life story reads like an adventure film script. He mingled with street musicians in Rio and widely travelled Brazil to pick up indigenous music. He befriended Arthur Rubinstein, who tells the story of their first meeting and then launches at neck-break speed into Prole do bêbê. Symphonic work including the Amazonas tone poem and plenty of chamber music demonstrate how closely Villa-Lobos was connected to the sounds of his country.
