Harmony Of The 19th Century: Den Haag Piano Quintet

  • © NHK – Japan Broadcasting Corporation

The Den Haag Piano Quintet has been focusing on works created in the 100-year period from the Mozart era of the late 18th century when music for piano quintets was born to the mid-19th century when artists such as Mendelssohn and Schumann made their mark. It is regarded as the world’s sole ensemble that mainly performs piano quintet works with original musical instruments. They also incorporate the playing style of the bygone days. In particular, the playing style of the contrabass where the instrument is tilted heavily almost to a “lying” position and played on had only been known through documents from that period.
