I Capuleti E I Montecchi
Bellini's version of the Romeo and Juliet story features Romeo as a breeches part, played by a mezzo soprano. It was cut down and radically re-imagined by Pop Up Opera, which specialises in performances in unusual locations. Staged as a story of love between members of opposing Mafia families, and set in dank basements – in this case in a 19th-century tunnel under the river Thames – the danger and the urgency of the story of the doomed lovers comes across intimately and powerfully.
