Franz Lehar’s operetta Das Land des Lächelns (The Land of Smiles) is one of the best-known hits of all time – and, according to Kurt Tucholsky, “the Puccini for the common man.” It tells the tale of two people whose love is shattered by foreign customs and ancient traditions. For the new production of this operetta, staged by Andreas Homoki and under the musical direction of Fabio Luisi, world star Piotr Beczala returned to Opernhaus Zürich as Sou-Chong. He had an equal partner in Julia Kleiter in the role of Lisa – a dream pairing of voices!
