Luther’s Songs

  • Ben Becker tracing Martin Luther © Ralf A. Gemmecke

Talking about Martin Luther, most people think of him posting his theses, his fight against the Pope. But Luther also was one of the most successful songwriters of all times, creating melodies and lyrics that remain popular even 500 years later. One might even say that it was his music that made Reformation a success – with good reason Heinrich Heine called Luther’s A mighty Fortress is our God the “Marseillaise of the Reformation”. Ben Becker sets out for a search of Luther’s sources and inspirations and finds evidence in archives and museums as well as in abandoned mines.
