Mourad Merzouki: Boxe Boxe Brasil

  • © Gilles Aguilar

In 2010, Mourad Merzouki invited the Debussy string quartet to share the stage with his hip-hop dancers. Playing on the contrasts and similarities between dance, boxing and classical music, Boxe Boxe has been performed in front of nearly 130,000 spectators since. Merzouki slips back on the gloves to rethink the choreographic writing and musical score, presenting Boxe Boxe Brasil with ten young carioca performers he met almost a decade ago. Part of a history of encounters, today he continues this Franco-Brazilian collaboration, taking over a masterpiece of Käfig's repertoire in an unprecedented and detonating version in the colours of Brazil.
