Riccardo Chailly Leads Manfred By Tchaikovsky

  • Riccardo Chailly conducts the Lucerne Festival Orchestra © Lucerne Festival/Peter Fischli

Richardo Chailly, who is following in the footsteps of Claudio Abbado as the head of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, will lead pieces by Strauss, Stravinsky, Mendelssohn and Brahms for the summer edition of the Swiss festival. Another high point of the festival: the masterful Manfred Symphony in B minor, op. 58 by Tchaikovsky, the nuances of which the conductor and his orchestra promise to reveal. Inspired by Lord Byron's dramatical poem, it tells the story of Manfred's wanderings in the Alps, tortured by remorse after having killed his lover.
