Rodelinda comes to the stage of the Teatro Real for the first time in a new production by one of today’s most acclaimed stage directors: Claus Guth. The conductor is Ivor Bolton, one of the leading names in this repertory. Of all the types of love described in operatic librettos – romantic, prohibited, family, love of power, love of country, or even self-love – the most infrequent is, precisely, conjugal love. Händel found the inspiration for his story in the Queen of Lombardy’s fidelity to her husband.
