Parma, Verdi Festival: on stage goes the most criticized and gossiped show of the year, Graham Vick’s Stiffelio, which will go down in history as “the one with the audience standing”. Vick decided that the opera would be staged on four mobile platforms, with the audience perfectly free to roam and to choose their own perspective. Chorus and actors mingle with the unaware public: all is part of the show. And the anticipated protests? None were voiced, swept away by the general emotion. Yes, because such a provocative, original and authentic Verdi is hard to find; indeed, to experience.
