Tannhäuser

  • Tannhäuser: choir of the Bayerische Staatsoper © Wilfried Hösl

The epic paradox between matter and mind, transcendence and immanence has been keeping busy philosophers and religions for centuries. The same questions trouble Tannhäuser, who is desperately in need for spiritual absolution after having perverted his soul with Venus. The unresolved tension between sacred love and profane love will lead to the death of everyone he did love. As the Bayerische Staatsoper writes it, “Tannhäuser is motion with no destination in sight. In the same way, Richard Wagner never seemed able to complete this work, no matter how often it was reworked.”
