What People Live For

  • © Pavla Cerna

What People Live For, a one-act opera pastoral by Bohuslav Martinu was created in 1952 in New York. It was written as a television opera and it premiered in 1953 on NBC. Martinu's libretto is based on a tale by Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy: Martin the Cobbler. A piece rarely found on the playbills. From this perspective, the performance of the audio recording and the ensuing film adaptation of the opera are a distinct cultural feat with international impact. The work itself is highly stylised, according to the principle of medieval mystery play, and also requires an adequately stylized film adaptation.
