Wozzeck

  • Wozzeck © Ruth Walz

In composing Wozzeck, Alban Berg wrote one of the most innovative operas of the 20th century. This poignant work shows how a vulnerable person can be driven to commit a deed of despair. Wozzeck became an instant classic, and its expressive power remains undiminished today. "Ugly and brilliant… Warlikowsk stays true to the grimy realism of Georg Büchner’s play. Marc Albrecht conducts Berg’s score with the hyperreal clarity of a nightmare." (bachtrack.com) In the title role British baritone Christopher Maltman was an unqualified success. Eva-Maria Westbroek was vocally resplendent as Marie… musically, this was a night to savour". (musicomh.com)
