Betroffenheit

  • Betroffenheit © Wendy D Photography

Betroffenheit is an Olivier Award-winning, boundary-stretching dance-theatre hybrid exploring the psychological states of trauma, grief and addiction. The title roughly translates as "a state of shock and bewilderment". Choreographer Crystal Pite and actor / playwright Jonathon Young based Betroffenheit on Young's own experience: his teenage daughter, niece and nephew died in a fire whilst on a family holiday. Combining tap, salsa, spoken word, puppetry and song with Pite's emotionally charged choreography, Betroffenheit was captured during its sold-out run at Sadler's Wells, London. Winner of the Rose d'Or (Arts) and Golden Prague (Performing Arts) 2018.
