Birthday In Exile – 150 Years Of Tonhalle-Orchester

  • Lionel Bringuier © Priska Ketterer

Zurich’s Tonhalle concert hall has closed its gates for three years due to renovation works. The orchestra therefore celebrates its 150th birthday in a provisional hall in gentrified Zurich West instead of the venerable Tonhalle building on the lake side. These are literally moving times for the Tonhalle Orchestra, a Swiss cultural institution. The relocation venture has caused incertitudes and dissonance. Will the audience follow? Will the complex relocation process succeed? Will the provisional home in the heart of Zurich’s nightlife area be a chance or a fiasco?
