Manon Lescaut By Giacomo Puccini
Giacomo Puccini’s first big success, Manon Lescaut upended the Italian opera tradition by developing leitmotifs in a Wagnerian way and introducing novel harmonic subtleties. For the staging at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Davide Livermore chose to set the action from Abbé Prévost’s novel in the early 20th century, and to make the historical era, a time of massive immigration that helped make America what it is today, a key element in the tale of impossible love between two tormented beings. A sumptuous and spectacular production, well-served by a 5-star cast: Liudmyla Monastyrska and Gregory Kunde.
