Sound Of Freedom

  • © Sounding Images

Like no other art form music deeply moves and affects people. Accordingly social movements and political songs are tied together since the French Revolution. The two-part documentary seeks out the Sound Of Freedom – from the French battle song Marseillaise to Billie Holiday’s black elegy Strange Fruit to the colourful Free Nelson Mandela movement and Lady Gaga’s LGBT hymn Born This Way. How does music carry ideas of resistance, uprising, solidarity and hope throughout history? Musicians like Patti Smith, Bono, Tom Morello, Udo Lindenberg, Manu Chao, Pussy Riot, Kate Tempest, Kendrick Lamar and M.I.A. comment on how their ancestors paved the way for their own work.
