The London Symphony Orchestra – Francois-Xavier Roth Conducts Wagner, Lalo, Debussy And Massenet With Edgar Moreau

  • © Julien Mignot

How did Claude Debussy manage to develop his unique style that became the foundation of modern music? His recently rediscovered First Orchestral Suite offers us a rare glimpse into the process. The work is still influenced by romantic discourse, yet it also includes the surprising harmonies that would become so characteristic of his later music. François-Xavier Roth has paired him with composers who were Debussy’s models: Wagner, for the power of his intertwining motifs; the many Spanish influences of Lalo’s too rarely heard Cello Concerto, interpreted here by the prodigal young soloist Edgar Moreau; and Massenet’s majestic Le Cid.
