Originating from New York, a serious economic crisis spreads at high speed across the whole world in 1857. One by one, candles are being replaced by paraffin lamps. Light is becoming expensive. In Zürich, composer Wagner is working on a new opera: Tristan And Isolde. The Tristan chord as a description of the times: lack of direction at a given moment. Mathilde Wesendonck and her super-rich husband, the silk-merchant Otto Wesendonck venerate Wagner in Zurich. The whole city is talking about this Zürich liaison and Mathilde is turning from a loving mother into a muse of the new music. The beginning of modernity in Zurich.
