Two Spirits

In the traditional Japanese imagination, anything, animated or not, can be inhabited by a spirit. As for example, the character of Futari Shizuka. The Maiden From The Sea, Toshio Hosokawa's new chamber opera about the tragedy of refugees. Inspired by Shizuka, a heroine of Noh traditional theatre, Futari Shizuka (The Two Shizuka), the only protagonist, is embodied by both a singer (Kerstin Avemo) and a Noh actress (Ryoko Aoki), to better symbolize a dialogue between being and spirit.
