Andris Nelsons Conducts Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony

"After each performance I become more and more convinced that my last symphony is an unsuccessful work [...] It has turned out to be too colourful, too massive, too insincere, too long, not at all appealing. Should I have already written myself out?" This was written by 48-year-old Piotr Ilyich Tschaikowski to his friend and patron Nadeshda von Meck. The premiere of his "Symphony of Fate" in November 1888 in St. Petersburg was by no means a failure. The enthusiasm for the work even grew with each further performance.
