Bluebeard

  • Bluebeard (Lyon Opera) © Stofleth

Ludovic Halévy’s and Henri Meilhac’s brilliant libretto is a satirical take on Perrault´s fairy tale and inspired Jacques Offenbach to compose his first true hit. Laurent Pelly, with many Offenbach productions to his credit, staged this Bluebeard at Lyon Opera to celebrate the composer´s 200th anniversary. We follow Bluebeard into one of his villages in search of a virgin to become his 6th wife, visit the King and his Court, a thinly veiled persiflage on Napoléon III and his cronies, and also witness how the street-wise Boulotte motivates the other five victims of Bluebeard to take their revenge.
