Argerich, Mehta & Staatskapelle Berlin
Maurice Ravel's La Valse combines three different styles: 1. the typical Viennese waltz in swaying three-four time; 2. the French valse, also in three-four time, but played strictly on the beat; and 3. a military march in gruff two-four time. You can hear a lot of jazz influences in Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major, but in the second movement, there is also a clarity which calls to mind the First Viennese School, as well as a touch of Chopin. Stravinsky's ballet music quotes several Eastern European folk melodies. There's a link between the work and La Valse, as Ravel originally planned his work as a ballet.
