Funabenkei – Dancing Before A Stunning Vista
At the outdoor Noh stage designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto that juts out into the sea of Enoura in Odawara City, the grand horizon, the sea surface that changes by the minute and the look of the sky all create a special one-time backdrop. A leading young Kabuki actor, Matsuya Onoe, takes on the challenge on stage and performs Funabenkei, one of the foremost masterpieces of Kabuki dance. The tragic fate of Taira no Tomomori, a chief commander of the Taira Clan who drowned himself in the sea, is depicted through a dance sequence.
