Paul Dessau: Let's Hope For The Best
Paul Dessau was a violin prodigy, conductor and composer of operettas and film scores. A German Jew, he emigrated to Hollywood during World War II before returning to the GDR in 1948 as a committed communist. Who was this composer, a man who could be as unruly and edgy as well as laconic or loving as the music that he penned? This film portrait sketches the fate of the artist, between assimilation and repulsion, political idealism and musical individuality, and condenses the ever-shifting history of the 20th century’s two Germanys as if under a magnifying glass.
