The Mammoth Man: Jörg Widmann

“At the moment of writing, the music takes on a life of its own. It remains a fragment because it is not what I had envisaged.” For Jörg Widmann, this condition is best described by the image of a labyrinth – an image that has gone on to become his lifelong theme. We are invited to accompany him “to the fringes” of his composition for a new and major piece of work. Widmann – for many years regarded as one of the best clarinettists in the world – is eventually led out of this compositional labyrinth by the clarinettist and conductor within.
