Vltava – The World Success Of Smetana

  • © Peter Horner / dokfabrik

In this documentary on Smetana's world success Vlatava, the work is musically analysed, but also placed in a superordinate historical context. It traces the continuing enormous importance of the piece for the Czechs in their changeable history, where it has also been subject to political, nationalistic abuse, and why its fascination is unbroken far beyond the borders of the Czech Republic. Why does The Moldau move people all over the world, who have never seen this river in their lives? The film's main protagonist, conductor Jakub Hrůša, goes on a search for clues in his Czech homeland.
