Winterreise – A Song Cycle By Franz Schubert And Wilhelm Müller
Franz Schubert's song cycle "Winterreise," composed in 1827 to Wilhelm Müller's poems from 1824, is an exploration of a shattered existence that is as existential as it is subjective. Müller was born in Dessau in 1794. In 1813 he fought in the Prussian army against Napoleon's troops during the wars of liberation. Then he first became a high school teacher, then a ducal librarian in Dessau. His circle of friends included Tieck, Goethe and Uhland. He lived in Dessau until his early death in 1827 – he died one year before Franz Schubert. With Samuel Hasselhorn (baritone) and Daniel Heide (piano).
