Johann Strauss’ musical masterpiece and one of his most performed operettas is a cheerful cat-and-mouse game about the pampered and overindulged Duke of Urbino. The Duke is a well-known womaniser. His personal barber Caramello, however, is the sweetheart of the poor fisher-girl Annina, who knows just how to ruin the Duke’s plans. Intrigues within the Senate, women’s wit and cunning, and the famous Carnival of Venice are the ingredients of this landmark of the golden age of operetta, where “joy and absurdity and delight are the order of the day”.
