After more than fifty years spent conveying in music the torments of the human soul, Verdi took leave of the world of opera with a sly smile. Falstaff, drawn from Shakespeare’s The Merry Widows of Windsor, is his only comic opera, the dream of a lifetime come true. It is an opera full of experimentation, the work of an amusing and amused Verdi. This Maggio Musicale production has Sir John Eliot Gardiner on the podium.
