Münchner Philharmoniker, Michael Volle & Valery Gergiev
Modest Mussorgsky wrote his song cycle on poems by Arseny Golenishchev-Kutuzov. Each of the four songs deals with death in a poetic manner. The cycle is considered Mussorgsky’s masterpiece in the genre. “It is a merry little piece,” said Dmitri Shostakovich of his Ninth Symphony. Whereas Shostakovich’s Seventh and Eighth Symphonies had lasted over an hour each and called for gigantic orchestral forces, the Ninth is scaled down to less than half an hour’s time and a small orchestra of almost Classical dimensions: indeed, there are moments when Shostakovich’s Ninth recalls Prokofiev’s “Classical” Symphony.
