Rappresentatione di animo et di corpo is neither an opera nor an oratorio, but the nucleus for both of them and, in any case, the first surviving piece of musical theater. It is designed as a sophisticated interwoven allegorical abstraction: The spoken prologue puts forward a thesis, which is proven right in the following three acts. Cavalieri’s strength lies in the varied composition of the choirs, the instrumental pieces, the ensembles and the use of dance rhythms. Cavalieri leaves a great deal of freedom in terms of the set-up of the instruments, so that the respective conductor becomes an even more important creative part within the production.
