Salzburg Easter Festival: Mozart Requiem

"This only happens in Salzburg: Easter Festival in autumn." Due to Covid-19, the Festival had to be postponed; it was held at the weekend before All Saints' Day. Artistic director Christian Thielemann opens with Mozart's Requiem. The excellent Bachchor Salzburg and a top-class quartet of soloists with Golda Schultz, Christa Mayer, Sebastian Kohlhepp and René Pape make the concert a dignified commemoration of the dead. And of course Thielemann who "has the incomparable ability to subordinate the orchestral sound to the singing voices." (SN) He exploits it "with nuance, from the barely audible pianissimo to the bloodcurdling fortissimo." (br-klassik.de)
