New Zealand Opera’s fresh interpretation of this powerful story of ambition showcases Handel's exquisitely lyrical music and demonstrates the opera’s continuing relevance for modern audiences. The film amplifies this engaging, immersive live performance, enhancing the story of mortal Semele’s desire for immortality and the tragedy that befalls those who reach beyond themselves. This site-specific production by New Zealand’s national opera company was recorded live at the magnificent Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland, New Zealand and features a cast of homegrown, international-level operatic talent.
