Teodor Currentzis & MusicAeterna in Lucerne
Mahler described his Fifth as a “cursed work” that “no one understands”. While the extreme variety of expression actually overwhelmed the audience at the time, the symphony enjoys the highest popularity today. Teodor Currentzis and the musicAeterna orchestra have been performing Mahler’s symphonies all around the world. Subsequently, musicAeterna performs a contemporary work by Alexey Retinsky. “Anaphora” is composed for symphony orchestra, electric guitar, three simantrons, and a hundred water whistles. Such a juxtaposition of a classical instrumentation with atypical instruments finds an exit from the conventional system, moving beyond the borders of the legitimate temperament and timbral hierarchy.
