Even though Massenet wanted to repeat the sensational success of “Manon”, he refused the demand of copying form and style of his triumphant opera. Instead, Massenet sought new forms of expression that were influenced by the work of Wagner. In contrast to Goethe’s model, the focus is not entirely placed on Werther but also on Charlotte. The opera musically follows not only Werther’s desperate love, but also the complex psychological development of this young woman. The most important singers of each generation take on both roles: Piotr Beczała embodies Werther and Gaëlle Arquez celebrates her role debut as Charlotte.
