Wild Souls. Symbolism In The Art Of The Baltic States

  • © Latvian Television

Baltic art emerged by the late 19th century almost simultaneously with the birth of the idea of independent Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, becoming a part of the strive for independence. After WWII, the Soviet occupation erased the Baltic States from the map of European art for 50 years. The exhibition "Wild Souls. Symbolism in the Art of the Baltic States" in Paris marks the centenary celebrations of the Baltic States. The Baltic artists of the early 20th century did not identify themselves as symbolists, and yet the curator of the exhibition saw a new take on this genre in their works.
