Arena Di Verona: Turandot

This production of Puccini’s last opera pays tribute to the legendary stage director Franco Zeffirelli, who would have turned 100 in February. “Turandot in its full glory” (Opera Today). “Netrebko easily swallows the high notes and the deadly expressionist register deviations of the part, but she does not merely sing it: she interprets it. A luxury of smorzature, piani, pianissimi … serve to tell of a princess of frost only because she is traumatised by male violence … perhaps more victim than executioner. What emerges is a character much more human and ultimately truer than usual” (La Stampa).
