Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 2 "Little Russian" / Elgar: Enigma Variations
Sir John Eliot Gardiner on the podium of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino puts on the poster a substantial program: Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 2 in D minor Op.17 “Little Russian” and Edward Elgar, Enigma Variations Op.36. At the opening of the concert, Tchaikovsky’s "Little Russia": a title that refers not only to the name that was used to indicate Ukraine, where the composer regularly went to visit his sister Alexandra and her seven grandchildren, but also in the presence of various popular themes of that area.
