Rossini Opera Festival: Otello
Throughout the 19th century, Rossini’s finely crafted Otello (1816) with its romantic and tragic atmosphere was considered one of the composer’s masterpieces – until Verdi’s opera of the same name appeared some seventy years later. Rossini’s Otello significantly differs from William Shakespeare’s play and Verdi’s opera, particularly by elevating the character Rodrigo to a major role alongside Otello and Iago, having earned the work the nickname “opera of the three tenors”. “Aesthetically brilliant” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). “A knockout new production […] The cast was exceptionally strong” (Bachtrack.com). “Eleonora Buratto is ‘the’ Italian soprano of today” (La Stampa).
