The painter Mario Cavaradossi loves the jealous opera singer Tosca. One day he helps Angelotti, who is politically persecuted, and Scarpia, the wicked chief of police, arrests Cavaradossi. Scarpia knows about the relationship between Tosca and Cavaradossi and tortures Cavaradossi until Tosca reveals Angelotti’s hiding-place. Scarpia orders Cavaradossi’s execution unless Tosca gives herself to him. Tosca pretends to agree but stabs Scarpia before he can catch her. Cavaradossi is executed nevertheless – Scarpia had tricked Tosca.
