Descent Into The Maelstrom

  • © Beacon Isle Films

Based on Edgar Allan Poe's 1841 short story Philip Glass composed in 1985 a choral work for the Australian Dance Theatre. The music was recorded, but the tapes were found to be corrupt on their return to America. The Phil Glass Ensemble re-recorded the work and it was released in 2002. Filmmaker Jan Vardoen obtained a go ahead from the composer to commission an arrangement for the Artic Philharmonic, which gave a concert in spectacular surroundings near the place where the original story was set.
