Edgar Moreau – Shostakovich – Toulouse Capitole National Orchestra At The Philharmonie

  • © Julien Mignot

The French composer Qigang Chen’s influences include both Messiaen, whose pupil he was, and traditional instruments from China, his native land. While his music builds a bridge between East and West, Shostakovich’s is fundamentally Russian and powerfully expressive. The young soloist Edgar Moreau brings all his ardour to interpreting the latter’s Cello Concerto No. 2, as Tugan Sokhiev and the Toulouse Capitole National Orchestra offer a beautifully rendition of the emotional intensity of his Fifth Symphony, the most frequently performed one.
