I Puritani

  • © Naxos

Despite its breathtakingly beautiful music, that opera has always had a much more difficult time with audiences than Bellini’s Sonnambula or Norma. That is due to the friction between the historical material and to the music’s overboarding dynamics. The resulting curtailments, adjustments and deformations, however, are exactly what we find interesting to deal with. At the end of Jossi Wieler’s term as opera director in Stuttgart, his landmark staging and the performance of I Puritani was celebrated as “a belcanto feast” and “a world class performance” not only by the press but also by the audience.
