Janacek, Berio, Schumann – Folk Songs

  • © Czech Television

Leos Janacek's orchestral ballad The Fiddler‘s Child from 1912 was one of his lesser-known works. The programme piece on Svatopluk Cech's text describes the ghostly story of the death beggar and his baby-orphan. The lively Czech world-music singer and composer Iva Bittova celebrates a jubilee in 2018. The Brno Philharmonic will accompany her in the cycle of folk songs arranged or composed by Italian modernist Lucian Berio (1925-2003). The Second Symphony op. 61 by Robert Schumann has been previously included among the compositions marked by Schumann's worsening psychic condition. Despite the circumstances of its origin, it is a kind of Schumann‘s Ode To Joy.
