Leos Janacek – The Moravian Genius

  • Lucy Crowe in The Cunnning Little Vixen (Glyndebourne) © Bill Cooper

Very few 20th century operas have made it into the core repertoire. Next to Richard Strauss, Leos Janacek comes to mind, who supplied at least five masterpieces which have conquered the world stages. Using very mundane plots, speech melody and Moravian folklore Janacek created operas with whose protagonists all of us can identify. This profile of the composer will show his progression to the final House of the Dead with extracts of major works, visits to places which mattered to him and interviews with experts such as Jiri Zahradka, Brian Large, Donald Runnicles, Jiri Belohlavek and Sir Simon Rattle.
