Romeo And Juliet By Charles Gounod

  • © Les Films Jack Fébus

The best-known love story in literature has been adapted as an opera several times. But the version by Charles Gounod, one of the great figures of French lyric opera, is surely the one that stayed truest to Shakespeare’s tragedy. After a 32-year absence, his Roméo Et Juliette returns to the stage of the Gran Teatre del Liceu. This coproduction with Santa Fe Opera, under the baton of Josep Pons, features two major international stars: Saimir Pirgu and Aida Garifullina. Stephen Lawless’s sets place the tale in the midst of the American Civil War.
